Summer Intern Departments & Duties

Below is a list of the departments participating in the Summer Intern Program.  Please review the potential duties required by each department prior to applying.

Ambulance/ER

  • Observe patient care from pediatric to geriatric 
  • Encounter patients with mild illness to trauma care
  • Shadow doctors, nurses, paramedics, EMTs, and techs.  
  • Assist with electrocardiograms (EKGS), x-rays, vital signs, splinting, collecting specimens, hygiene care, bedside procedures, and transport patients
  • Change linens on stretchers and stock supplies 
  • Shadow EMS on QRV ride along time  
  • Receive understanding of ER flow and function 

Dietitian/Wellness

  • Shadow bariatric and clinic registered dietitians (RDs) 
  • Encounter clinic patients
  • Encounter hospital patients
  • Learn about variety diabetes, weight management, food allergies, etc.
  • Work with nutrition services
  • Work with employee wellness department

Gabrielson Clinic (Women’s Health)

  • Assist as a chaperone for visits
  • Room patients 
  • Collect height and weight 
  • Observe multiple medical positions
  • CNA experience preferred 

Information Technology (IT)

  • Take inventory
  • Help with desk duties 
  • Check and update laptops
  • Update whiteboard computers
  • Locate missing devices

Nursing

  • Shadow different types of job roles 
  • Assist within scope of practice
  • Conduct inventory count
  • Handle restocking
  • Research on common issues 
  • Work on communication with patients
  • Perform hand wash audits

Occupational and Physical Therapy

  • Observe various staff
  • Witness multiple patient treatments
  • Escort patients throughout the facility
  • Help with general duties 

Orthopedics (1/2 Day Only)

  • Shadow various staff 
  • Observe patient appointments
  • Escort patients throughout the facility
  • Help with stock rooms

Specialty Clinics

  • Shadow various staff 
  • Work at various outreach clinics
  • Observe different specialty encounters which may include: allergy, cardiology, dermatology, ENT, gastroenterology, general surgery, IV infusion therapy, pain management, podiatry, urology, and wound care

Cardiac Rehabilitation / Respiratory Therapy 

Observe, manage, or assist with:

  • Arterial Blood Gas
  • Breathing treatments
  • C-sections
  • Car seat challenges
  • High risk deliveries
  • CPAP on babies
  • ER with traumas/codes
  • CPAP/BIPAP/ventilators/Airvos
  • Heart monitors, home sleep tests, ambulatory blood pressure  monitors, overnight pulse ox
  • Cardiac stress tests
  • Titration studies
  • Home CPAP/BIPAP compliance download
  • Breathing tests

Family Medicine Clinic

  • Perform scribing
  • Act as a medical secretary
  • Stock and order supplies
  • Room patients
  • Perform limited lab duties

Health Information (Coding)

  • Work alongside HIM clerks 
  • Learn about release of information, medical record retention, chart analysis, phone duties, etc.  
  • Learn about coding for all different specialties including clinic, outpatient, inpatient, surgical, obstetrics, etc.
  • Have hands-on experience with computer system and HIM duties

Maintenance

  • Conduct preventative maintenance
  • Learn duties of maintenance
  • Perform landscaping 
  • Conduct inspections 
  • Handle painting projects

Nutrition Services (Dietary) 

  • Wait on customers
  • Run cash register
  • Answer the phone
  • Take room service orders
  • Take trays to the patient rooms
  • Serve Assisted Living residents
  • Perform cleaning duties / wash dishes
  • Serve individuals in cafeterias
  • Stock different locations throughout the hospital 
  • Help with cold prep 
  • Help day cook with hot meals

Radiology (1/2 Day Only)

  • Shadow radiology techs
  • Escort patients throughout the facility
