I find myself trying to be more diligent about being engaged in the conversations at home. It is easy to try to multitask or get caught up in surfing on your phone. I have learned over the years that when a teenager wants to talk to you, it is best to drop everything and listen as it is a rare occurrence. Now that I am working on being more engaged and present in these conversations, I also clearly need to work with the kids on doing the same. It seems like we are slowly losing the art of conversations and the ability to be focused for more than a few minutes.
One of the things that has always set Iowa Specialty Hospitals apart has been the culture and the level of engagement by our team. We are consistently focused on the patient and what is best for the patient. If we keep this in the forefront, it is so much easier to stay in engaged as we are doing worthwhile work and making a difference in our patients’ lives. Being engaged means something different to each of us, but for me it truly means being present and focused. When we are all present and focused, there is nothing we can’t accomplish. This is one of the many reasons that I am grateful to work with this team. Thank you for staying engaged, even when healthcare is hard. You are truly inspiring.
