Amy's Reflections

December 23, 2019

This past week I had an interesting conversation with Andrew. He was getting some gum out of a little zip pouch he had attached to his school computer. When asked where he got all of the gum, he responded he bought it. When asked where he got the money to purchase it, he responded with a well, you see it’s like this. I buy a pack of five pieces of gum in the school store for fifty cents. I then sell each piece of gum for twenty-five cents and then with the profit I buy more gum. Not going to lie, I stared in disbelief. My 13 year old is running a side business at school. The level of innovation in his little mind amazes me.

If we could all channel our internal innovation and problem solving ability just think what we could accomplish. As we head towards a new year I would challenge you to commit to taking time to reset your mind with a tilt towards innovation. Take all those things that are frustrating you and bringing you down or holding you back and truly look at it with a perspective of innovation. Ask yourself - if I wanted to fix it or make it work what could that look like. Then share your solutions!! We are truly stronger together and many minds working on solutions are one of our most powerful resources. I feel confident that 2020 could be one the most incredible years for Iowa Specialty Hospitals and Clinics. One thing I know for sure is we will need every one of your brilliant and creative minds to help us become even better and more innovative.
