Be happy.
What is happy?
The first thing that came to mind was the song “happiness is” from the musical “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown”. I was looking at the lyrics, and it said happiness was finding a pencil and pizza with sausage. (Ok, well … the bar is obviously set rather low for this crowd … I really can’t imagine being happy over a pencil discovery or pizza with sausage on it.) I like to think happiness is much more than that.
Yesterday - the ISH Band got to play at the Iowa State Fair. I watched a video of us on the last song, and I was bouncing up and down - in my cut-off scrubs and bare feet, and I was happy. On Friday, we had the party in my backyard, and during the last set that the band played - as the lightning was going off in the distance - a bunch of us were dancing. I was happy. Music makes me happy, and rocking out with my friends makes me happy.
Other things that make me happy are seeing people laugh and have fun. Deep happiness comes from knowing those I care about are safe and content. Long-term happiness is looking back on my life’s journey and having great memories about the trip.*
Happy is a great place to reside.
*I tend to remember more of the fun things about trips. Like Ragbrai - it was hot, hilly, humid, long and crowded, but what I remember is hanging and drinking beer with friends, laughing, and flying down the hills at breakneck speeds … that was really fun.
